Hi there! If you don't know me, I'm Glass Zeraki. I'm a director of The Phoenix Federation. I've been playing Dust for roughly 8 or 9 months now.
I've been using the Assault suit ever since I started playing Dust. I honestly never put much thought into what suit I would use, so I just stuck with it through thick and thin. The fit in general has it's pros and cons, and each Assault suit has it's own personality and nuances that require dedicated playtime to realize. Choose wisely!
In this thread, I'll share what I know and answer any questions you may have. So, where to start?
So, the first piece of advice I can give you about using Assault suits is to actually focus on your weapon. Your job is to find the enemy, flank them, and kill them. The way the game is structured right now, EVERYONE dies very quickly. Not to mention Assaulting is largely a solo endevour-don't count on a teammate being there to back you up. Putting SP into armor & shield upgrades as an Assault will leave you just as dead in most encounters and so is more of a luxery than a necessity. Get your weapon to Proficiency 5 (if you can stand it), and it's also worth it to invest SP to get Handheld Weapon upgrades to level 5. You'll notice a big difference. Once you get your weapon skilled to a decent level and the Handheld Weapon Upgrades skill maxed, you can focus on defense.
It's pretty straightforward as an Assault: Main weapon, 1 or 2 complex damage modules (I wouldn't use more than 2 for Pub matches. 1 should be enough actually.), Shield extenders and/or Armor plates, a sidearm (doesn't have to be anything special), Armor Repair module if you stack armor, Shield Regulators/Rechargers if you stack Shield Extenders, and last but not least, a piece of equipment of your choosing. Not a lot of frills here.
For the majority of my time in Dust I've carried Drop Uplinks on my suits. That's because it ensures that your team maintains a foothold in the right places, as well as adding to your WP gain which contributes to Warbarge Strikes. You most likely won't be able to fit anything higher than Advanced Uplinks on your suit, so I wouldn't bother getting the Drop Uplinks skill past level 3.
Another piece of equipment that's very beneficial is the Active Scanner. I have level 1 into the Active Scanners skill and I don't see much reason to skill any further into it. The basic Scanner gives you a brief view of what's around you, which is all you need. Using it would be mostly for your own benefit rather than the squad's.
Nanohives are another good piece of equipment, although I don't use them anymore. Getting the Nanocircuitry skill to level 2 grants you access to the Compact Nanohive, which repairs armor and resupplies ammo.
Now, a word of caution. With the next game update, Uprising 1.8, the Assault class could be broken or just neglected (even more than it is now) and everything we know would be thrown out the window. Same goes for every other suit in the game. So until then, save your SP. I'll update this thread with any new information I find useful.
